Al Kamandjati Festival for traditional and spiritual music

About the Festival

Al Kamandjati Festival is an annual international festival organized by Al Kamandjati Association during the month of April. The festival is dedicated to spiritual and traditional music. The idea is based on the belief that the time has come to broaden people’s understanding of Palestine (with a focus on Jerusalem), and to give its music world a greater sense of universality, by welcoming other cultures. The festival consists on offering highly qualitative performances, lectures, photo exhibitions, workshops and guided tours all over Palestine, in order to increase access to the population to diverse cultural expressions. The festival is itinerant, passing by the North of Palestine, the South and Jerusalem, with a specific focus on marginalized locations. Artists from all over the world are invited to present their respective musical cultures to Palestinians, as well as to work with Palestinian musicians in order to come up with new musical creations that are then performed during the festival. More than 10 countries were represented during the 1st edition. Most of the festival activities take place in archaeological or historical sites in Palestine. Indeed, Palestine is home to a fabulous sacred heritage, and the combination of archaeological and musical heritage becomes even more rich and interesting, as it helps the understanding of history through new lenses, different from those we are used to. Incredible links can be made between intangible and tangible forms of heritage; and studying their relationship can highlight phenomena sometimes forgotten.
